(Media-Newswire.com) - Seven University of California campuses were awarded nearly $39 million in New Faculty grants for stem cell research from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine today ( Aug. 13 ), with another $7.4 million in grants to UC-affiliated institutes. In all, 18 of the 23 researchers who received grants are affiliated with UC. The grants, which range from about $2 million to $3 million each, will support promising California researchers who are in the early stages of their careers. They will pursue research aimed at developing treatments for such conditions as cancer, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis.
CIRM's governing Independent Citizens Oversight Committee approved a total of $59 million in grants today. This second round of New Faculty awards builds on the 22 grants given out in December, when UC researchers from eight campuses were awarded nearly $25 million for stem cell research.
CIRM received 55 applications from 32 institutions for the latest round of grants. This second round of New Faculty awards differs slightly from the first round in the focus on recruiting promising new physicians and researchers to the field of stem cell research, and in requiring funded scientists to name mentors who will guide them toward establishing successful, productive careers in stem cell research.
