(Media-Newswire.com) - Steven Pifer, former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine and a visiting fellow with the Brookings Institution, will give a presentation titled “What Does Russia Want? How Do We Respond?” on Thursday ( Sept. 11 ). The talk will take place at 5:30 p.m. in Room 1110 of the Allen Building at Texas A&M University.
Pifer’s presentation is part of the Scowcroft Institute of International Affairs’ monthly International Affairs Seminar series that brings international affairs scholars and practitioners from across the country and around the world to the Bush School of Government & Public Service at Texas A&M, to Texas A&M and to the Brazos Valley.
A retired Foreign Service officer, Pifer’s more than 25 years with the State Departmentfocused on U.S. relations with the former Soviet Union and Europe, as well as on arms control and security issues. His assignments included deputy assistant secretary of state in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs ( 2001–2004 ), where he had principal responsibility for policy toward Russia and Ukraine; ambassador to Ukraine ( 1998–2000 ); and special assistant to the president and National Security Council senior director for Russia, Ukraine, and Eurasia ( 1996–1997 ), where he advised the president, vice president, and national security adviser on policy toward the former Soviet Union.
Ambassador Pifer also served at the U.S. embassies in Warsaw, Moscow, and London, as well as with the U.S. delegation to the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces negotiations in Geneva. He holds a B.A. in economics from Stanford University. Currently, he is a visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution and a senior adviser with the Russia and Eurasia Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
Pifer’s participation in the International Affairs Seminar series continues a tradition of high-profile participants.Previous speakers have included General David Petraeus, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, and Washington Post Military correspondent Tom Ricks.The series, now in its fourth year, is one of the Bush School programs under the administration of the Scowcroft Institute of International Affairs ( SIIA ). The series was previously known as the National Security Seminar series; its new name reflects SIIA’s focus on international affairs broadly defined.
