(Media-Newswire.com) - Attorney General Richard Blumenthal today announced a settlement with former officers of Seymour Ambulance Association involving the alleged diversion of charitable funds intended to benefit the association and a cancer-stricken volunteer firefighter.
Former Seymour Ambulance Executive Director Frank Marcucio, III, and his then-wife June Marcucio, a former ambulance employee, have agreed to pay an $18,000 penalty to the state and $17,000 to Seymour Ambulance, although they admitted no guilt or wrongdoing.
The settlement resolves allegations by Blumenthal and Seymour Ambulance that the Marcucios misspent thousands of dollars in grants intended to benefit Seymour Ambulance, as well as charitable funds intended for a volunteer firefighter who died of cancer.
The Marcucios allegedly used the money over at least four years to pay for personal family vacations; numerous personal items and services; and payments to Accountax LLC, a company Marcucio owned, for substandard or nonexistent bookkeeping and accounting services.
"This settlement restores funds and public trust to Seymour Ambulance," Blumenthal said. "The alleged misconduct diverted money intended for lifesaving services such as defibrillators, vehicles and other equipment necessary to protect the community. Under new leadership, Seymour Ambulance can now use these restored resources to support its vital services and programs.
"My office will continue our vigorous efforts to fight and deter misuse of charitable and nonprofit funds."
The settlement also bars the Marcucios for 10 years from holding any office, directorship, position, employment or any other association with any charitable organization in the state where they would have control or access to the funds of the organization or authorization over the disbursement of such funds. They will also be prohibited from soliciting charitable funds during that time period.
