The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is seeing a long-sought facelift thanks to the new football lease between the Coliseum Commission and USC.
“This fall, fans of the Trojans and their opponents will have the chance to enjoy games in a Coliseum that is going to be getting better every year,” said Kristina Raspe, associate senior vice president of real estate and asset management.
(Media-Newswire.com) - The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is seeing a long-sought facelift thanks to the new football lease between the Coliseum Commission and USC.
“This fall, fans of the Trojans and their opponents will have the chance to enjoy games in a Coliseum that is going to be getting better every year,” said Kristina Raspe, associate senior vice president of real estate and asset management. “Under the terms of our new lease with the Coliseum Commission, many facility upgrades will take place in coming years.”
Improvements recently completed include:
• replacement of the football field turf and upgrades to its drainage system;
• replacement of the main videoboard on the peristyle end of the Coliseum;
• upgraded sound system;
• cosmetic improvements to the peristyle;
• addition of 1,607 additional seats ( bringing the capacity to 93,607 );
• addition of an LED display at the tunnel at which players enter the field; and
• addition of new concession service lines and a new grilled food concession.
Upcoming improvements include:
• upgrading of elevators and escalators;
• upgrade and addition of restroom facilities;
• upgrade and addition of concession areas;
• replacement of fencing around the facility;
• replacement all of the seating;
• locker room upgrades;
• addition of a video/scoreboard on the west end of the Coliseum; and
• the implementation of numerous life safety improvements.
USC has been the primary football tenant of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum for 85 years. Construction of the Coliseum – named in honor of those who died in World War I – began on Dec. 21, 1921 and was completed on May 1, 1923. On Oct. 6, 1923, in the first varsity football game held at the new stadium, the Trojans were victorious over Pomona College before a crowd of nearly 13,000.
