Dr. John Morgan, assistant professor of neurology in the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine, has been named director of the MCG Movement Disorders Program’s National Parkinson Foundation Center of Excellence. Dr. Morgan has worked closely with former director Kapil Sethi since 2003.
(Media-Newswire.com) - Dr. John Morgan, assistant professor of neurology in the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine, has been named director of the MCG Movement Disorders Program’s National Parkinson Foundation Center of Excellence. Dr. Morgan has worked closely with former director Kapil Sethi since 2003.
As director, Dr. Morgan will administer two foundation grants. The grants help provide comprehensive care and optimize the interdisciplinary aspects of the Movement Disorders Program and increase outreach and community education, including developing community networks to help educate those in rural and underserved areas about Parkinson’s.
The Movement Disorders Program studies new treatments for Parkinson’s and other disorders such as tremor and restless leg syndrome. It also offers comprehensive care by a team that includes movement disorder specialists, a functional neurosurgeon, a psychiatrist, nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, social workers and neuropsychologists. For its leadership in providing innovative care and developing community relations, the program is one of approximately 50 centers worldwide to earn the National Parkinson Foundation designation.
Dr. Morgan came to MCG after completing a residency in neurology and fellowship in movement disorders at the University of Virginia. He researches Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease and Restless Legs Syndrome.
He is a member of the American Academy of Neurology’s Education Committee, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs National Parkinson’s Disease Consortium, the Movement Disorder Society and the Society for Neuroscience.
Dr. Morgan earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of North Florida and a medical degree and doctoral degree in neuroscience from MCG. He completed a clinical fellowship in Parkinson’s disease and movement disorders with Dr. Sethi in 2003 and is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
