(Media-Newswire.com) - ITHACA, N.Y. -- To bring Cornell University's medical researchers closer to cutting-edge nanotechnology techniques and to help forge intercampus research collaborations, the Cornell NanoScale Science and Technology Facility in Ithaca has opened a branch at the university's Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City.
The opening of the office will be marked by a "Symposium on Nanomedicine" Wednesday, Sept. 24, from 2 to 5:30 p.m. at Archbold Commons/Weill Auditorium, 2nd Floor, C Building, at Weill Cornell Medical College, 1300 York Ave., to celebrate the opening and provide information on the branch's functions.
The symposium will examine the use of nano- and micro-fabrication tools and explore techniques for clinical and basic life sciences research, including the development of drug delivery systems, biosensors and fluidic devices, implantable devices, and tissue scaffolds with applications in medical diagnostics and imaging, treatment of cancer and other degenerative diseases, and in orthopedics and wound repair.
The symposium will feature the following speakers:
George Malliaras, the Lester B. Knight director of the NanoScale Facility, discussing, "The Cornell Nanoscale Facility office at the Weill Cornell Medical College." Michael Shuler, Cornell professor of chemical engineering and chair of biomedical engineering, on "Microfabrication, Cells and Tissues: Building Towards Better Therapies." Lance Kam, Cornell assistant professor of biomedical engineering, on "Engineering Cell Function through Micro- and Nanofabrication." The new office will be located at the Institute for Computational Biomedicine, Room Y13-02, at the medical college. The nanotechnology facilities at the Ithaca campus also are open to any Weill Cornell Medical College faculty, post-doctoral researchers and students.
