(Media-Newswire.com) - Local people will have the opportunity to learn more about the arts & crafts movement in Great Britain in the latest series of lunchtime lectures held in the city by the University of Bath’s Division of Lifelong Learning.
This autumn the three lectures are linked by the theme “Head, Hand and Heart – The Arts & Crafts Movement in Great Britain.”
The programme starts on Friday 3 October with a talk by lecturer Denis Moriarty on the artist William Morris. This illustrated talk discusses Morris’ personal achievements, the places he lived, his social circle and, above all, the enormous range of his creative activity.
The series continues on Friday 7 November with a lecture on the potter William de Morgan by Claire Longworth, Curator of the De Morgan centre in London. De Morgan was a life long friend of William Morris, and he designed tiles, stained glass and furniture for Morris & Co. from 1863 to 1872. His tiles are often based on medieval designs or Persian patterns, and he experimented with innovative glazes and firing techniques.
The series will conclude with a lecture on the artist Frank Brangwyn by Dr Libby Horner on Friday 5 December. G K Chesterton described Brangwyn as ‘the most masculine of modern men of genius’, yet Brangwyn was capable of producing exquisitely delicate and serene works while his oils were as voluptuous in colour and form as his furniture was minimalist.
The lunchtime lectures run from 12.15pm to 1.15pm in Carpenter House, Broad Quay, Bath.
Everybody is welcome and admission costs £6.50 per head with a sandwich lunch. Those who book all three lectures in advance will benefit from the discounted rate of £18. To book please phone 01225 388703 or go to the link above.
