NEW LAND LINK BETWEEN QUEENSLAND AND PAPUA NEW GUINEA
An historic agreement has been signed to help open new doors for collaboration in land matters between the Queensland and Papua New Guinea governments. Natural Resources and Water Minister Craig Wallace today signed a memorandum of understanding with Papua New Guinea’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Lands and Physical Planning and Mining Dr Puka Temu at Queensland’s Parliament House.
(Media-Newswire.com) - An historic agreement has been signed to help open new doors for collaboration in land matters between the Queensland and Papua New Guinea governments.
Natural Resources and Water Minister Craig Wallace today signed a memorandum of understanding with Papua New Guinea’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Lands and Physical Planning and Mining Dr Puka Temu at Queensland’s Parliament House.
Minister Wallace said the agreement would strengthen the existing ties between the Queensland and the Papua New Guinea governments, especially in the areas of land administration and management.
"This memorandum will provide a basis for the Bligh Government to promote and support Queensland firms to undertake projects underpinning the government’s trade strategy and framework for international aid and development business," Minister Wallace said.
"It will help open doors for private Australian companies wishing to undertake development work in Papua New Guinea.
"Through Toward Q2: Tomorrow’s Queensland the Bligh Government has set targets for a strong Queensland, creating a diverse economy powered by bright ideas.
"A strong Queensland target is to make Queensland Australia's strongest economy, with infrastructure that anticipates growth. Strengthening the existing international ties will assist us reach this target."
Mr Wallace said the memorandum was the latest step in formalising the relationship between the two governments that began 18 months ago.
"In May last year, the Queensland Government proudly hosted a delegation from Papua New Guinea’s Department of Lands and Physical Planning on a week-long study tour," he said.
"I'm told the officers were highly impressed with our automated titling system, which has also attracted interest by delegations from Malaysia, China, India, Laos and Brunei."
During the visit, secretary of Papua New Guinea Department of Lands and Physical Planning Mr Pepi Kimas said the Queensland land titling system was by far the best he had seen, having worked in land administration for close to 40 years.
Mr Wallace said the memorandum would be used as the basis for collaboration in technical exchange and training on land management and administration.
"I believe we can both look forward to many years of fruitful partnership and mutually beneficial co-operation in the spirit in which the memorandum is signed," he said.
