Lexile Measures Added to Latest Edition of LANGUAGE!
Leading Intervention Program Uses Widely Adopted Reading Measure to Help Struggling Students Build Literacy Skills
(Media-Newswire.com) - DURHAM, N.C. – Oct. 7, 2008 – MetaMetrics®, Inc. today announced that it has partnered with Sopris West® Educational Services, a Cambium Learning company, to link The Lexile Framework® for Reading with LANGUAGE! ® The Comprehensive Literacy Curriculum ( Fourth Edition ). By embedding the Lexile Framework within the LANGUAGE! intervention program, educators now can use students’ Lexile® measures to better differentiate classroom instruction for struggling readers in grades 3–12 and monitor growth in reading ability throughout the school year.
Recognized as the most widely adopted reading measure, Lexile measures are used at the school level in various capacities in all 50 states. Each year, more than 28 million Lexile measures are reported from state and national assessments, classroom assessments and reading programs, representing about half of U.S. students. LANGUAGE! provides explicit, systematic and research-based instruction for struggling readers, writers, speakers and spellers who score below the 40th percentile. Lexile developer MetaMetrics and Sopris West created placement tests to identify candidates for LANGUAGE! and determine at which instructional level students should begin the program. Based on the placement test results, students are assigned to one of six instructional levels in their Lexile range. Each level comprises cumulative and sequential multisensory activities for developing skills in phonemic awareness and phonics, word recognition and spelling, vocabulary and morphology, and grammar and usage. At the conclusion of each instructional level, students take a progress indicator test to measure growth and enable teachers to adjust instruction based on each student’s reading ability. “In today’s age of accountability, we need to ensure that our teachers are equipped with the resources they need to help prepare students to achieve at the highest levels—both in and out of the classroom.” said MetaMetrics President Malbert Smith III, Ph.D. “We are pleased to add LANGUAGE! to the growing list of intervention programs that have adopted the Lexile Framework to connect struggling readers with instructional materials that will help them build critical literacy skills.”
The Lexile Framework is an educational tool that connects readers with reading materials using a common measure called a Lexile. What makes the Lexile Framework unique, and what has led to its widespread adoption, is that it measures both reading ability and text difficulty on the same developmental scale. When used together, Lexile reader measures and Lexile text measures allow educators, parents and students to find books and other materials that meet and challenge a reader’s unique ability and interests. Currently, more than 115,000 books, 80 million articles and 60,000 Web sites have Lexile measures, and the number of resources with Lexile measures continues to grow.
