Using the storefront of the LACE gallery and the stars on the Hollywood Boulevard "Walk of Fame," the installation rethinks the new urban and technological setting to provoke interaction and capture motion and Internet data through a full-scale, illuminated plastic prototype. The Nov. 13 event features a presentation of all three "Superficial Superglow" prototypes.
Funding for this project has been provided by a Arts Forum grant from the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture, a Charles Moore Traveling Fellowship from the UCLA Department of Architecture and Urban Design, the UCLA Center for Embedded Networked Sensing, and cityLAB.

SUPRASTUDIO — "Monocoques, Semi-monocoques and Superleggera"
Perloff Hall, Room 1308 ( Perloff Gallery )
Gallery hours: Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.

UCLA's M. Arch. 2 SUPRASTUDIO program, featuring a new focus on connecting research to professional practice, launches with an immersive investigation into the future conditions of transportation, urban infrastructure and high-performance building design, with Toyota Motor Sales, USA Inc. acting as sponsor, client and consultant. Toyota's think-tank has settled on the year 2020 — a time of peak oil, stressed natural resources and potentially overcrowded urban conditions — as the timeframe for the investigation to explore the future of Los Angeles and other cities grappling with issues of growth and identity. This exhibition explores the enduring architectural question of the relationship of surface to structure, a problem the investigation views through the lenses of both architectural and automotive design, focusing on the spectrum of systems defined as monocoque, semi-monocoque and superleggera.
Funding for the SUPRASTUDIO has been provided by Herta and Paul Amir, Joyce and Aubrey Chernick, and Toyota Motor Sales USA Inc., with in-kind support from EDAW.
