(Media-Newswire.com) - Three students from the University of Bath’s Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering have been awarded a significant international prize for their recent work.
The winners; Oliver Neve, Kevin Hares and Rob Jeans scooped three of five Structural Engineering awards this year at the Institution of Structural Engineers’ Model and Full-Scale Testing Awards.
The three Civil Engineering students, who graduated this year, were required to submit an edited version of their final year masters research dissertation, for which the innovative use of laboratory testing is the main criterion for judging.
The competition entry included the following topics; the possibilities of strengthening and stiffening timber floors and assumptions drawn from the bending of beams.
The international award is open to all final year undergraduates in Structural Engineering and aims to promote awareness amongst students about the potential of physical testing as part of the design process.
The annual competition awards prizes for the best dissertations on the application of physical models to solve problems associated with the design of structures. Entries are usually related to projects undertaken as part of an undergraduate or MSc course of study.
Professor Vaughan Hart, Head of the University’s Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering said: “We are extremely proud of the achievements of these graduates.
“Students from this Department have now won an international award in these competitions, for nine years in a row.
“It demonstrates not only the quality of our research and teaching, but also the outstanding experiences to which our students are exposed.”
