(Media-Newswire.com) - More than 300 middle school students from throughout the region will perform with the North Idaho College Wind Symphony in the “Thank You Mark Williams” concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12 in the Boswell Hall Schuler Performing Arts Center.
This annual gathering of the bands event brings together eighth-grade band members from area middle schools for a joint performance with peers and mentors.
Students from Woodland Middle School, Canfield Middle School, Sandpoint Middle School, Lakes Middle School, Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy, Timberlake Junior/Senior High School, Bonners Ferry Middle School, Lakeland Junior High School, Post Falls Middle School, Lakeside Middle School, River City Middle School, St. Maries Middle School, Clark Fork Jr./Sr. High School, Kellogg Middle School and Newport Middle School will combine to form two separate bands that will perform at the concert.
The concert will honor Mark Williams, a composer who wrote specifically for school bands and orchestras. Williams grew up in Spokane and taught music for years specializing in elementary band. He published more than 200 works and served as the conductor and artistic director for the Spokane British Brass Band. Williams died in January of 2008.
“Mark was a good man—a great man—who did so much for music, specifically for the age group featured in this concert,” said NIC Band Director Terry Jones. “So we thought it was so fitting to utilize this concert to honor his many contributions.”
One group will combine to perform three pieces under the conduction of guest director Scott Jones, the director of bands at Mt. Spokane High School. They will perform “Star Spangled Banner,” “Korean Hill Song” and “American Heroes March,” all pieces written by Williams.
The second group led by guest director Lee Shook, band director at Northwood Middle School in Spokane, will perform the Williams pieces “Procession of the Sardar,” “Eagle Ridge” and “Flight of the Condor.” The NIC Wind Symphony will perform one piece by Williams, “Fantasy on Yankee Doodle,” in addition to “Resplendent Glory” by Rossano Galante, “Noisy Wheels of Joy” by Eric Whitacre and “Buffalo Jump Ritual” by local composer Dan Bukvich.
All of the bands will join together for the performance of John Phillip Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever March” as the concert’s grand finale.
Together, the more than 95 members of the NIC Wind Symphony have thousands of years experience with their instruments ranging from two years experience to more than 65.
“The combination of youthful energy from the middle school students and the experience of the NIC Wind Symphony’s phenomenal musicians makes this the event of the year,” Jones said.
The concert is free and open to the public.
