(Media-Newswire.com) - All former workers at the Ames Laboratory at Iowa State University in Ames are invited to participate in a free medical surveillance program designed to detect possible health conditions related to exposure to harmful substances during their employment.
The program is open to all former Ames Laboratory employees, including contractors and subcontractors, scientific and technical staff, undergraduate and graduate assistants, administrative staff, construction workers, and custodians, regardless of current health status or length of employment.
Ames Laboratory employees may have been exposed to uranium, thorium, beryllium, ionizing radiation and other toxic substances historically used at the lab, according to Laurence Fuortes, M.D., the program's principal investigator and University of Iowa professor of occupational and environmental health.
The free screening includes a chest x-ray, breathing test ( known as a pulmonary function test ) and general blood work, including a test for beryllium, a metal that may have been used at the lab.
For more information about the Ames Laboratory-Former Worker Program and the free medical screening, call the project's toll-free number at 866-282-5818.
