The world's largest atom smasher -- the Large Hadron Collider or LHC -- will be the subject of a free, public talk from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, at T-Spoons, corner of Linn and Market streets. Jane Nachtman, associate professor in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Department of Physics and Astronomy, will speak.
(Media-Newswire.com) - The world's largest atom smasher -- the Large Hadron Collider or LHC -- will be the subject of a free, public talk from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, at T-Spoons, corner of Linn and Market streets. Jane Nachtman, associate professor in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Department of Physics and Astronomy, will speak.
Nachtman, a member of the UI Compact Muon Solenoid ( CMS ) team that has conducted on-site work on the LHC, will discuss how the LHC will perform critical tests in the next few years of certain predictions in theoretical physics such as the existence of the "Higgs particle." She also plans to show some of the inner workings of the LHC and discuss her research.
Café Scientifique of Iowa City, whose discussion sessions are held on the third Thursday of the month from September to May, is presenting the talk.
