Professor Warwick said: "I am absolutely delighted to be the recipient of the
2008 Mountbatten Medal. It is one of the most prestigious prizes in the engineering community and I feel comes as a reward for the pioneering research work put in by all the team in the Cybernetics Department at the University of Reading.
Chris Earnshaw, IET President, said: "Professor Kevin Warwick has an outstanding worldwide reputation for his pioneering work on the interaction between man and machine and, in particular, the interface between computers and the human nervous system. Not only has he lead the groundbreaking scientific and engineering research he has also engaged with the wider public and young people in promoting the understanding of cybernetics and the interaction between robots and people.
"His numerous books and research publications have brought the subject to a very wide audience around the world. The Mountbatten Medal recognises Kevin's extraordinary personal leadership in this field which will dramatically improve the quality of life for many people with disabilities affecting the nervous system."
Professor Kevin Warwick was part of a multidisciplinary team at the University of Reading which developed a robot controlled by a biological brain formed from cultured neurons. This cutting edge research is the first step to examine how memories manifest themselves in the brain, and how a brain stores specific pieces of data. The key aim is that eventually this will lead to a better understanding of development and of diseases and disorders which affect the brain such as Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease, stroke and brain injury.
