(Media-Newswire.com) - University of Iowa Division of Performing Arts will present "Collaborative Performance: Image-Story-Form," at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 11-13, in the Space Place Theater of UI North Hall.
Collaborative Performance is an advanced course that explores the creative process, combining the contributions of diverse artists in a collaborative production. This fall's class will present an evening of work that includes live music; original choreography; new set, costume and lighting designs; and multiple musical-composition premieres.
Guided by Department of Dance faculty member Jennifer Kayle, the three "jumping-off points" began with a collaborative interpretation of an image, extrapolating visual information into other media. Second, each group responded in their own medium to a story or an aspect of story telling. In the final study, each creative team took up an experiment with compositional form.
The resulting evening of work has been curated, edited and developed from these initial investigations to reveal a range of both individual and collaborative voices.
"In addition to four lovely music and dance 'Interludes,' our audience can also join us for a televised bite of chocolate chip antics in 'On the Apron,' or enter tubular dimensions in 'E. Ezllebed,'" Kayle explains.
"Inspired by the image of a tunnel, 'Edge of a Breathing Passageway' investigates line, angle, depth and shadow to create bodies of light. Inspired by Henry Miller's 'Black Spring' and Iowa City's own Black Angel, 'Ari and the Elephant' explores the fluctuating landscape of dreams. 'Objects May Appear,' tests the notion of perspective as an arrangement of lights, set, sound and movement reflect new points-of-view."
The contributors include choreographers Lynn Bowman, Sydnie Mosley and Joanna Rosenthal; composers Matthew Dotson, Minpyo Kim, Andrew Meixner and Daniel Roeder; designers Ellen Erickson and Courtney Watson; stage managers Gina Mantione and Michelle Weidinger; and writer/director Branden Byers.
The performers include artists from the creative teams, as well as dancers Lezlie Calloway, Shannon Holst, Carrie Macollum, Kate Vigmostad, Elizabeth Bergman, Emily Gehrke, Jennifer Graham, Annie Duffy, Karen Christ, Jung-Hung Kim, Chih-Hsien Lin, Krista Mills and Samantha Cremer; actor Brittainy Barattia; and pianist Jonathan Tauscheck, flutists Rolando Hernandez-Gaitan and Cecilia Taher ( flute ), and cellist Emmalee Hunnicut.
The UI Division of Performing Arts in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences includes the academic departments of dance, music and theater.
Admission to the performances is $12 for adults, $6 for UI students and youth. Tickets are available in advance from the University Box Office, which has moved back into the Iowa Memorial Union, at 319-335-3041 or 1-800-346-4401. Any remaining tickets will be available at the door.
