Society’s response to wildfires is focus of Newkirk Center discussion
Firestorms afflict California like snow or hurricanes hit other parts of the country. A panel of experts led by School of Life Sciences professor Stephen J. Pyne of Arizona State University will explore the resulting public policy issues in a discussion entitled “The Social Ecology of Fires.” The event is sponsored by the Newkirk Center for Science and Society, established in 2001 with an endowment provided by Martha and James Newkirk. The center aims to improve scientific response to community needs and increase the uses of science for the benefit of society.

BACKGROUND: Stephen J. Pyne researches interactions between nature and man. His many books about fire ask thorny public policy questions. How should we think about fires in California? Are they an emergent plague? Which science helps us to understand the societal challenge we face? Chip Prather, Orange County Fire Authority chief; Peter Bryant, UC Irvine developmental and cell biology professor; and Nalini Venkatasubramanian, UCI computer science associate professor, will join Pyne in the discussion.
