UC San Diego Student Foundation Hosts “The Day Tuition Ends”
Ask any UC San Diego undergraduate the value they put on their education and most will answer with the total amount of their student fees. (Media-Newswire.com) - Ask any UC San Diego undergraduate the value they put on their education and most will answer with the total amount of their student fees. Yet the university’s Student Foundation, an organization sponsored by the UC San Diego Alumni Association and the UC San Diego Foundation, is encouraging students to appreciate the full value of their education – beyond expenses – through its “The Day Tuition Ends” event taking place on campus January 7 and 8, 2009. The two-day campaign will feature events open to UC San Diego students, alumni, faculty and staff; visual displays; a video; and more.
“The Day Tuition Ends” is an effort to raise awareness about the what it takes to educate a student, dollar for dollar; at what point those tuition dollars run out each year; and who contributes to the full value of students’ degrees.
Annual undergraduate fees at UC San Diego are approximately $9,000 but add up to only 8.9 percent of the cost of educating one student at UC San Diego. The remainder is paid by the university, the State of California funds for education, which funds approximately 12 percent, and donations. But the dollar amount doesn’t account for invaluable life-changing experiences students have inside and outside the classroom; the inspiring lectures by prominent faculty, visiting scholars and alumni; or the tremendous resources available to students through the Geisel library, faculty research projects and countless other educational opportunities offered at the region’s leading public university.
“The Day Tuition Ends” will be highlighted by visual displays on UC San Diego’s Library Walk, illustrating how tuition dollars would run out if not for government support and the philanthropic efforts of UCSD alumni, students and friends. The campaign will conclude with a free event on January 7 at 6:00 p.m. at the Loft, located in the Price Center in the heart of the UC San Diego campus. Open to students, alumni and other members of the UCSD community, this event will feature keynote speaker and UC San Diego Foundation member Brian Walsh ’89, as well as a video showcasing interviews with students about the value of their education and the resources that made it possible for them to attend UC San Diego.
“The big picture of life at UC San Diego is worth much more than numbers on a tuition check,” noted Armin Afsahi, assistant vice chancellor of the university’s Office of Alumni Affairs and executive director of the UCSD Alumni Association. “The ‘Day Tuition Ends’ campaign seeks to help students to better understand and appreciate the full value of their academic careers at UCSD, and encourages them to one day give back to their university as much as they have received.”
