(Media-Newswire.com) - Over 700 local school pupils will investigate slime, robots, bubbles and more in a two-day hands-on science fair opening at the University of Bath on Friday 13 March.
Bath Taps into Science gives people of all ages the chance to learn about the world by having fun with science, through interactive and attention-grabbing displays and demonstrations.
Highlights include a magic show, a slime stall and robotic lego. A liquid nitrogen show will freeze everything from bananas to batteries to balloons, to help people learn about materials, electricity, magnetism and gases.
Twenty different primary and secondary schools from Bath and the surrounding area will visit the fair at the University, plus a school from Spain. Families and shoppers can enjoy its second day at Bath’s Green Park Station on Saturday 14 March.
Some of the stalls will be manned by local school children who have been trained as ‘expert presenters.’
Mathematics professor Chris Budd said: “The involvement of local schools is a real source of pride. There is no other festival where children and young people can not only come to the fair as observers but are also expert presenters of science to their peers.”
The theme of this year’s event is ‘complexity’, looking at how science can help us to make sense of the world, and exploring patterns in nature. Visitors will be able to experiment with a special ‘chaos machine’ to understand more.
The annual fair is run as part of National Science & Engineering Week ( 6-15 March ) and this year it is one of three festivals in the UK shortlisted for an award from the British Science Association.
It is organised, run and supported by hundreds of volunteers from the University of Bath, Bath Spa University and the City of Bath College together with Keele University Earth Sciences Education Unit and organisations including the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution, The Ethical Property Group, B&NES Waste Services, the Herschel Society, Wessex Setpoint, the Propioception Trust and Science City Bristol.
On Friday 13 March the fair will be held at the University of Bath’s Founders’ Sports Hall ( 11am to 3pm ). The second day will run at Green Park Station on Saturday 14 March ( 10am to 4pm ). Entrance is free.
