Mesa Community College Student Selected for All-USA Team
The USA TODAY recognition program, administered by Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, honors outstanding two-year students who extend their community college education to better themselves, their schools and their communities. Thompson receives a cash award of $2,500 and medallions from Phi Theta Kappa.
(Media-Newswire.com) - Mesa, AZ – April 6, 2008 – USA TODAY announced that Mesa Community College student Eric Thompson was selected to their annual All-USA Community College Academic Team. Thompson is one of only 20 students in the nation selected to the team.
The USA TODAY recognition program, administered by Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, honors outstanding two-year students who extend their community college education to better themselves, their schools and their communities. Thompson receives a cash award of $2,500 and medallions from Phi Theta Kappa.
Thompson is a psychology major who has overcome bipolar disorder and homelessness to become a remarkable leader and scholar. One of his most noteworthy achievements was being chosen as one of four students out of approximately 700 psychology students to present research work at the Western Psychological Conference. Thompson's research focused on the effects of subsonic, binaural audio frequencies on trait anxiety in adult subjects. Thompson has also served more than 1,000 volunteer hours for community organizations.
Paul A. Elsner, Chancellor Emeritus of Maricopa Community Colleges, said "I have seen the best of student leadership over the years and Eric represents the uppermost top rung of such leaders."
In addition to Thompson's award, another MCC student, Nedd Anderson, was selected as a Coca-Cola Gold Scholar. The award is based on scores earned in the All-USA Academic Team competition. Anderson is a sports psychology major who has served more than 1,300 volunteer hours for various community organizations. He receives a cash award of $1,500 and a gold medallion.
