(Media-Newswire.com) - A new Traffic Management Centre has been set up in Townsville to help the public access up-to-date information about state-controlled roads.
Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace said the centre would deliver the latest information on state-controlled road conditions to help motorists avoid traffic congestion and major road incidents.
“The demand for this type of fast and accurate information is reflective of society’s need to get where they’re going quickly and safely,” Mr Wallace said. “Through an interactive phone system and website, the centre aims to help people get to their desired destination in the most efficient and timely way.
“People can call 13 19 40 to gather the information they need for their journey, or they can call in to report traffic incidents or system faults.”
Mr Wallace said the centre would gather its information from a number of sources including network traffic cameras, reports from the public, CCTV camera surveillance, radio scanners, and local authority bodies.
“We also have two live web cameras hooked up to our website ( www.131940.qld.gov.au ), where people can view traffic conditions on some roads themselves,” he said. “The cameras update a new image every 60 seconds.
“The cameras are placed at the intersection of the Bruce Highway and Mount Low Parkway and on the Bruce Highway at the Burdekin River Bridge. There are plans to include more webcams at a later date.”
Mr Wallace said the new Townsville TMC would manage traffic in North Queensland south to Gumlu, west to Pentland and North to the Cardwell range.
“Outside of these hours, calls will be answered by the Brisbane Metropolitan Transport Management Centre, which has access to our regional system network,” he said.
The TMC can be contacted on 13 19 40. Information can also be accessed via the website at www.131940.qld.gov.au, variable message boards and radio broadcasts.
