WRHU Radio Hofstra University Marks 50 Years of Broadcasting on June 9, 2009
The official celebration of the milestone will take place November 6-8, 2009 when members of WHCH (Hofstra College Hempstead) and WVHC (Voice of Hofstra College), two predecessors to the current radio station, as well as WRHU (Radio Hofstra University) alumni will gather. The Hofstra Radio Alumni Association (HRAA) will host a variety of events and activities including a silent auction and alumni brunch. The main event will be a gala on Saturday, November 7, 2009 when the HRAA will induct its first members into a new "Radio Hall of Fame."
(Media-Newswire.com) - Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – On Tuesday, June 9, 2009, WRHU Radio Hofstra University will officially mark 50 years of broadcasting at Hofstra University.
“A half century for any endeavor deserves commemoration, but this milestone is especially significant for Hofstra Radio,” says Hofstra Radio Alumni Association ( HRAA ) President Marc Wiener, ’70. “Our legacy is the cultural history of the 20th century as broadcast by thousands of student voices. Whether in sound or in person, every one of them will be represented at our November Gala.”

Throughout its 50-year history, the non-commercial radio station has received many accolades, including Folio, Hearst, Audie, New York Associated Press Broadcasters and Press Club of Long Island Media Awards. Additionally, WRHU has Long Island’s largest radio news team with more than 75 students. For more than 45 years, WRHU has reported live from candidate headquarters each election night and has had reporters at both the Democratic and Republican National Conventions. Most recently, student reporters covered all aspects of the final 2008 presidential debate held at Hofstra on October 15, 2008, including interviews with local politicians and legislators.
In celebration of the 50th anniversary, WRHU, in conjunction with Hofstra’s School of Communication, launched a speaker series featuring prominent alumni from WHCH, WVHC, and WRHU including Charlie Kaye, executive producer for news at CBS Radio, Lee Harris, 1010-WINS news anchor and radio legend Dan Ingram.
WRHU also began the “50 project” that will allow alumni to return to the airwaves to broadcast their all-time favorite shows.

WRHU, Radio Hofstra University, is Long Island’s oldest non-commercial radio station, broadcasting 24 hours a day, seven days a week on 88.7FM and online at www.wrhu.org. Founded in 1950 as a club, WHCH was limited to the Hofstra campus. In 1959, the station received an FCC broadcast license and became WVHC, the Voice of Hofstra College. In 1983 the station expanded its broadcast range and became WRHU.
