Christopher Buckley receives the 2009 Tampa Review Prize for Poetry
RIVERSIDE, Calif. th Christopher Buckley, professor of creative writing at UC Riverside, has won the 2009 Tampa Review Prize for Poetry. The award includes a $2,000 cash prize and publication of his winning manuscript, "Rolling the Bones."
(Media-Newswire.com) - RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Christopher Buckley, professor of creative writing at UC Riverside, has won the 2009 Tampa Review Prize for Poetry. The award includes a $2,000 cash prize and publication of his winning manuscript, “Rolling the Bones.”
The prize is awarded annually for a previously unpublished book-length manuscript. Some of the poems in “Rolling the Bones” will be published in a future issue of Tampa Review, a literary journal published twice a year by the University of Tampa Press. “Rolling the Bones” will be published simultaneously in hardback and paperback in early 2010.
“Professor Buckley continues to gather richly deserved recognition – the Guggenheim fellowship in 2007-2008 and a James Dickey Prize for poetry this past year,” said D. Charles Whitney, chair of the Department of Creative Writing. “It is particularly rewarding to see our senior faculty continue to add to UCR’s, and the department’s, reputation.”
Tampa Review judges praised Buckley’s submission for its “local identity and global reach” in a manuscript “sensitive to political, economic, spiritual, and philosophical nuance,” according to the journal’s Web site. “Buckley offers thoughtful meditations on our part in a cosmic game in which a roll of the dice or the bones in California can rattle the foundations in Ecuador or Egypt,” the judges wrote. “Buckley’s poems are dense with carefully observed details, heavy with rich images. Always evocative, sometimes surreal, Buckley renders even the most quotidian experience as something memorable, occasionally sublime.”
Buckley has written numerous books of poetry, and his work has appeared in publications such as The New Yorker, American Poetry Review, The Hudson Review, Crazyhorse and The Nation.
Among his previous awards are a Guggenheim Fellow in Poetry, the James Dickey Prize, a Fulbright Award in creative writing to the former Yugoslavia, four Pushcart Prizes and two grants in poetry from the National Endowment for the Arts. The University of California, Riverside is a doctoral research university, a living laboratory for groundbreaking exploration of issues critical to Inland Southern California, the state and communities around the world.
