(Media-Newswire.com) - Conservative Party Leader David Cameron was sized up by a University of Bath business student when he met the young entrepreneur in his Cotswold constituency on Thursday 13 August.
Mr Cameron, MP for Witney, met 22-year-old Alex Edwards from Chipping Norton and his business partner, 25-year-old Richard Demczak, to hear about the rapid rise of their bespoke suit tailoring business, Aptus Suits, which they started just six months ago.
The pair set out to rival the quality of a Savile Row suit without the matching pricetag, focusing on internet sales and relying on word of mouth to generate sales.
Orders for around 25 tailor-made suits per month are outstripping all expectations and the company was appointed official tailor for white-tie May Balls at colleges in Oxford and Cambridge.
Mr Cameron heard about the inspiration behind their business when the friends waited on well-tailored guests as a University holiday job at a local country estate. They spent a year researching the world of well-groomed fashion, mastering the art of measuring up, employing an expert tailor and sourcing fine cloths.
“Meeting David Cameron and talking to him about setting up the business and how we operate was a real thrill,” said Alex. “Clearly a well-made suit is a vital part of his wardrobe, so let’s hope we impressed him enough to consider one of our suits in the future.
“We didn’t ever expect the business to grow this quickly. Part of the reason we set it up was to put into practice some of the business skills I’m learning on my business degree. I’d never have had the confidence to start out in business otherwise.”
Richard is working for an Oxford law firm while Alex returns to Bath in October to juggle the growing business with the final year of his Business Administration degree at the University’s School of Management. He stands in good stead to be the best dressed student on campus, admitting to having to be careful about how much he spends on suits for himself.
The business will be taking to the road to attend national countryside fairs and horseshows, capitalizing on the growing popularity of its bespoke Harris Tweed suits among shoots across the UK.
