The Arcadia Foundation congratulates the citizens of Honduras for upholding democracy.
(Media-Newswire.com) - At present date it appears Manuel Zelaya, former President of Honduras, will not be returning to the executive branch. Mr. Zelaya breached article 239 of the Honduran constitution, covertly attempting to doctor the pétreos articles that would avoid change in the duration of the presidential tenure. His actions were documented, contended and led to his dismissal. As there are no impeachment proceedings in Honduras, the former President was rightfully arrested. The constitution has long been the pillar United States citizens and their representatives in the senate turn to, containing the letters of the law Americans so dutifully follow. It is in Hondurans doing so, upholding their constitution and not allowing the deposed Mr. Zelaya back in office, that the Arcadia Foundation wishes to note, and indeed congratulate.
The Honduran constitution does not have the same tenured history as that of the United States or any other country in Latin America and the Caribbean. The document is simply not as old. We at the Arcadia Foundation are therefore proud of Hondurans for not allowing their letter of the law be breached so soon after its inauguration.
Many refer to the current government of Honduras, led by President Roberto Micheletti as de facto, as interim. In truth, Mr. Micheletti’s predecessor ran a campaign of corruption, in many cases proven in American courts. Though some may question the terms of his dismissal, it has been proven that they were in proper accordance with Honduran law, issued by Honduran court, and have set no precedent in their manner. When one breaks the law to the degree Mr. Zelaya has, etiquette pauses for diligence.
The Arcadia Foundation was founded on the notion that when people choose democracy, they choose liberty. The Arcadia Foundation wishes to thank the citizens of Honduras for their support in this endeavor, and looks forward to documenting progress in their democratic process and indeed providing a retrospective on the events as they unfolded in the weeks to come.
