The Nature Conservancy Applauds Minnesota Lawmakers for Supporting Forest and Prairie Conservation
MINNEAPOLIS - November 4, 2009 - The Nature Conservancy today applauded Sen. Amy Klobuchar and U.S. Rep. Jim Oberstar of Chisholm, Minn. for their leadership in securing funding that will conserve more working forestland in northern Minnesota. The Conservancy also expressed its gratitude to Sen. Klobuchar for helping provide additional funding to conserve prairies in western Minnesota.
(Media-Newswire.com) - MINNEAPOLIS — November 4, 2009 — The Nature Conservancy today applauded Sen. Amy Klobuchar and U.S. Rep. Jim Oberstar of Chisholm, Minn. for their leadership in securing funding that will conserve more working forestland in northern Minnesota. The Conservancy also expressed its gratitude to Sen. Klobuchar for helping provide additional funding to conserve prairies in western Minnesota.
Federal FY’10 Interior Appropriations approved by the House and Senate and signed into law last week by President Obama include $3 million to purchase working forest conservation easements in Minnesota’s Northwoods. The legislation also includes $500,000 to conserve native prairie, primarily through conservation easements, located within the boundary of the Northern Tallgrass Prairie National Wildlife Refuge in western Minnesota and northeastern Iowa.
“Senator Amy Klobuchar Congressman Oberstar were instrumental in ensuring that this legislation will help keep our working forests intact,” said Peggy Ladner, director of The Nature Conservancy in Minnesota. “Working forests provide good jobs, wildlife habitat and public access for outdoor recreation.
“We also want to thank Senator Klobuchar for supporting efforts to work with landowners to conserve native prairie. Grasslands are the most threatened and least protected habitat in the U.S. And we appreciate President Obama’s support of both these important conservation initiatives.”
