(Media-Newswire.com) - Victorians of all ages are being encouraged to play their part in the rebuilding of Marysville by signing up for the Marysville Marathon Festival, Sports Minister James Merlino said today.
Mr Merlino said families can take part in a range of events – including a Marathon and Half Marathon, 10 kilometre run or three kilometre run or walk – on Sunday, 8 November.
“Black Saturday was the worst natural disaster Australia has ever seen and we will continue to stand by communities as they recover and rebuild their lives and communities,” Mr Merlino said.
“The Marysville Marathon Festival is another great opportunity for Victorians to give something back to one of the communities who lost so much in the tragic fires.
“There is a course for all ages and abilities – whether it is the Marathon or Half Marathon event or a family walk or fun run over the three kilometre course.
“In times of adversity, sport can play a key role in building community strength, which is why it’s so important that local people can stay involved in their community, and in sport.”
Mr Merlino congratulated the dedicated Marysville Marathon organising committee, headed up by the town’s local doctor, Lachlan Fraser, for their tireless effort in coordinating the event.
Dr Fraser said more than 2000 people were expected to take part in the Festival.
“We hope that this event will play a major part in our town’s resurgence and attract back to Marysville scattered residents, tourists and supporters, as it slowly rebuilds and once again becomes the relaxing country haven loved by so many,” Dr Fraser said.
“Participating in the Festival is a very practical way for supporters of this once gracious town to help stimulate its recovery – walkers are most welcome in the shorter events, bring the whole family, including the dog if you desire.”
Online entries will close at 6pm on Thursday, 5 November, while entries can be made on the day up to one hour prior to the event but only cash payments will be accepted.
