(Media-Newswire.com) - Cranbrook, B.C. – TELUS turned up a new $1,000,000 cell tower this week at Lake Koocanusa, ensuring residents and travellers in the area have access to the latest wireless technology.
The tower, located about five kilometres south of Elko, expands TELUS' mobile voice and wireless high-speed data coverage to include the majority of the recreational areas around Lake Koocanusa, along the highway south to Grasmere, and north all the way to Cranbrook.
“Finishing this project is very rewarding not only because of the tough construction challenges related to the geography, but because of the community support shown to us for bringing new wireless coverage to the region,” said Frank Mungiello, TELUS service manager. “Whether our customers need to make a routine call or dial 911, this investment ensures Canada's largest wireless network will continue to be there when our customers pick up their wireless device.”
Mungiello adds, “I would like to personally thank the Honourable Bill Bennett and local resident Chris Inglis for their support and dedication in seeing this project completed.”
The tower gives area residents access to TELUS' new 3G+ network, launched last week. The network offers customers the technology for increased wireless data download speeds of up to 21 megabits per second, access to a world class selection of compelling mobile devices and international roaming service to more than 200 countries. This initiative also ensures a smoother transition to fourth generation ( 4G ) wireless technology known as long term evolution ( LTE ).
“It's wonderful to see this very important project for residents in the area and our community finally completed,” said Hon. Bill Bennett, minister of community and rural development and MLA for Kootenay East. “My appreciation goes to TELUS for listening to the community needs for cell coverage and delivering a world class service.”
This project is part of TELUS' ongoing capital investment in British Columbia. TELUS is investing $600 million in the province's advanced wireless and broadband networks in 2009 alone, and more than $2 billion across Canada.
Since 2000, TELUS has made more than $19 billion in capital and operating expenditures in the province of British Columbia. Since 2000, TELUS, its team members and retirees have contributed more than $50 million and 1.5 million volunteer hours to charitable and community organizations in B.C.
The capital investment disclosed in this release is consistent with TELUS' overall capital expenditure guidance for 2009.
