(Media-Newswire.com) - Leaders of the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust of Muscatine, Iowa, University of Iowa Health Care and the UI Foundation have announced a $2 million gift from the Carver Charitable Trust that will establish an operational endowment for the DNA Facility in the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine.
The proceeds from the operational endowment will support research projects, help to recruit and retain essential faculty and staff, and assist in the purchase of scientific instruments.
"We are deeply grateful to the leaders of the Carver Charitable Trust for their support of the DNA Facility," said Michael Apicella, M.D., senior associate dean for scientific affairs at the UI Carver College of Medicine. "Their vision continues to benefit patients not only from Iowa, but from around the world."
First established in 1987, the DNA Facility has a tradition of providing cutting-edge services and resources used in the analysis of DNA and RNA to Iowa investigators. The mission of the DNA Facility is to maintain, and make available, leading edge technologies that permit users to pioneer important scientific discoveries.
Each year, the services and resources provided by the DNA Facility support the research efforts of hundreds of investigators at the University of Iowa as well as investigators from other academic institutions across the state of Iowa.
"The work done here is essential for scientific discovery," said Kevin Knudtson, Ph.D., director of the DNA Facility. "The DNA Facility has worked closely with investigators on projects that could lead to significant advancements in scientific discovery."
This $2 million gift from the Carver Charitable Trust is a portion of the trust's $63 million commitment to the Carver College of Medicine, originally announced in 2002.
The UI Foundation is the preferred channel of support for private contributions to all areas of the University of Iowa. Foundation staff work with alumni and friends to provide funds for facilities improvements, scholarships, professorships and other forms of support for the UI.
