Invitation to lively debate on controversies of Italian politics
The free open forum will see academics, Italian journalists and invited experts discuss one of the most hotly debated and difficult issues in the last decade of Italian politics: Is Italy a country of reformers without reform?
(Media-Newswire.com) - Local people are invited to join a lively debate on the heated issue of political reform in Italy, at the University of Bath on Friday 4 December.
The free open forum will see academics, Italian journalists and invited experts discuss one of the most hotly debated and difficult issues in the last decade of Italian politics: Is Italy a country of reformers without reform?
The event will discuss why successive Italian governments have campaigned on a platform of radical reforms, yet have largely failed to bring them about. From reform of the parliamentary system to federalism; the justice system to public administration: results are at best incomplete and at worst inconclusive.
The fourth government headed by Silvio Berlusconi was elected in 2008 and after more than a year in power the reform of criminal justice remains a slogan, and the fate of fiscal federalism highly uncertain. The public deficit is set to rise to 120% of gross domestic product, making reform yet more difficult to achieve.
The event is organised jointly by Professor Anna Bull and Dr Gian Luca Gardini, of the University’s Department of European Studies and Modern Languages. Speakers will make brief presentations before giving the audience the chance to join in the discussion with opinions and questions.
Professor Bull said: “In my view, the Italian situation marks a significant shift from the past. It used to be said that in Italy typically everything had to change so that nothing would change; now it looks as if all the political parties need to do is to promise change without actually having to implement it.”
Dr Gardini added: “I anticipate a very lively debate as these are extremely controversial issues in Italy today and the panel has been deliberately selected to represent a variety of perspectives.”
The forum will be held on Friday 4 December from 3pm to 6pm in Room 3 East 2.2 at the Claverton campus, no tickets necessary.
