Appointment of Marine Management Organisation Board Members 18/10
The Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009 establishes the MMO, a new executive Non- Departmental Public Body, as the UK Government's strategic delivery body in the marine area and a centre of marine management expertise, to ensure effective planning and management of our seas. The MMO is due to become formally operational on 1 April 2010.
(Media-Newswire.com) - The Marine Management Organisation’s ( MMO ) first board has been appointed by Environment Secretary Hilary Benn.
The Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009 establishes the MMO, a new executive Non- Departmental Public Body, as the UK Government’s strategic delivery body in the marine area and a centre of marine management expertise, to ensure effective planning and management of our seas. The MMO is due to become formally operational on 1 April 2010.
The board members are:
Rodney Anderson Richard Birmingham Robert James Derek Langslow Jeremy Loyd Nigel Reader Jane Ryder Jayne Scott The appointments, which are either for three or four years, will begin on 1 February 2010.
These appointments were made in accordance with the Code of Practice issued by the Commissioner for Public Appointments. The appointments were made on merit and political activity played no part in the selection process.
On the same day Steven Gant, will take up his position as Chief Executive of the MMO after being formally appointed on 15 December 2009.
Notes to editors Board Members will be entitled to a fee of £11,804 based on a minimum time commitment of 36 days a year. Where additional time input may be required for those who are appointed to Board Committees, remuneration will be on a pro rata basis. None of the Board Members have declared any political activity. Robert James, Derek Langslow, Nigel Reader and Jayne Scott have been appointed for four years. Rodney Anderson, Richard Birmingham, Jeremy Loyd and Jane Ryder have been appointed for three years. Rodney Anderson is a freelance consultant. He has extensive experience in local and central Government, most latterly as Director of Marine and Fisheries in Defra. He holds no other ministerial appointments. Professor Richard Birmingham is currently Head of the School of Marine Science and Technology at Newcastle University. Prior to his academic career he worked as a fisherman in Scotland and Iceland, and as a trained boatbuilder in East Anglia. He holds no other ministerial appointments Robert James is a lawyer and has spent the last 20 years on projects that focus on the marine environment. He is currently an equity partner with Geldards LLP. Robert is currently a non-executive director of Business in Focus. He holds no other ministerial appointments. Dr Derek Langslow has extensive experience as a non-executive director. He is Chairman of East of England Tourism, a board member of Passenger Focus ( a Ministerial public appointment with remuneration of £16,331 pa ) and a Trustee of the Natural History Museum. He was, until recently, on the board of the Harwich Haven Authority. He trained as a biochemist at Cambridge University and lectured at Edinburgh University. He was Chief Executive of English Nature ( 1990-2000 ). Jeremy Loyd has extensive experience in media, broadcasting, public relations and publishing. He was managing director of Capital Radio London Ltd and helped set up Carlton TV. More recently he was Deputy Chairman of Blackwells. He has developed an interest in marine issues, including marine biology. He holds no other ministerial appointments. Nigel Reader CBE recently retired as Director of Finance of the Environment Agency. He is a qualified accountant, having worked for Brooke Bond Oxo and Standard Telephone and Cable. He also worked for Wessex Water and the National Rivers Authority. He has been on the board of Water Aid since 1999. He holds no other ministerial appointments. Jane Ryder is currently Chief Executive of the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator, which she helped set up. She began her career in law, and was a partner with Boyd Jameson WS where she focused on the commercial and litigation side of maritime law. She was Director of the Scottish Museums Council for eight years. In addition to her executive career, Jane has held a number of voluntary positions with several charities. She is currently on the board of the Advisory Committee on National Historic Ships ( a Ministerial public appointment with no remuneration ). Jayne Scott has extensive experience as a non-executive director, currently holding Ministerial appointments with Ofgem ( remuneration of £25,000 pa plus £3000 allowance as Audit Committee chair ) and the Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence ( remuneration £7,880pa ). She was also previously Deputy Chairman of ENTRUST. She is a qualified Chartered Accountant, having worked for Price Waterhouse Coopers, Lothian Health Board and Fife Health Board. She now has her own consultancy company, the Scott Ross Partnership, which focuses on the health and education sectors.
