(Media-Newswire.com) - COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio State University has received a $2 million gift from the Harry T. Mangurian Jr. Foundation to support medical research and fund an endowed professorship in business.
The Ohio State University Medical Center will receive $1 million to create two Harry T. Mangurian Jr. Foundation funds for leukemia research and Lewy bodies’ dementia research. Ohio State’s Fisher College of Business will receive $1 million to create the Harry T. Mangurian Jr. Foundation Professorship in Business.
"We are pleased to provide this support to Ohio State,” said Stephen G. Mehallis, chairman of the Harry T. Mangurian, Jr. Foundation. “Our founder was a successful business leader who had a deep appreciation for both higher education and medical research. These gifts confirm his vision and commitment toward making a significant impact in each of these areas." Mehallis received his bachelor’s degree in business from Ohio State in 1961 and served as the chief financial officer of Mr. Mangurian’s ventures since 1972.
The Harry T. Mangurian Jr. Foundation was founded in 1999 by Mr. Mangurian and his wife Dorothy, to provide support to medical, educational and environmental organizations both nationally and internationally. Mangurian, who was owner of Boston Celtics basketball team from 1979 to 1983, passed away in October 2008 at the age of 82.
Dr. Steven Gabbe, CEO of OSU Medical Center, says the generosity of the Harry T. Mangurian Foundation will greatly improve the lives of patients and their families. “These grants will help further our research efforts in leukemia and dementia and provide more insight into two potentially devastating medical conditions that impact individuals and their loved ones.”
“This gift ensures Fisher’s continued success in attracting and retaining faculty who are both extraordinary teachers and distinguished researchers who influence the corporate community by moving theory into practice,” said Christine A. Poon, dean and John W. Berry, Sr. Chair in Business at Fisher. “We are grateful that the Harry T. Mangurian Jr. Foundation shares Ohio State’s vision of creating a better world through education and high impact research.”
