(Media-Newswire.com) - The University of Iowa Alumni Association's S.T.A.T. ( Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow ) Ambassadors on Saturday, March 6, will host the second annual Nearly Naked Mile, a charity event where runners will take off layers of clothing for donation to the Salvation Army before hitting the streets of Iowa City.
Organizers said that after stripping down, runners must wear clothing covering at least the bathing suit areas. "No buck naked runners are allowed," said S.T.A.T advisor Leslie Prideaux. "Of course, being nearly naked is optional, but you must donate at least one piece of clothing to participate in the race. If being nearly naked is not your bag, feel free to wear a costume in the spirit of our fun race."
Registration begins Monday, Feb. 8 at http://www.iowalum.com/nnm/ and is open to the UI community and students.
The Nearly Naked Mile starts at 3 p.m. March 6 and will begin and end at Hubbard Park, with S.T.A.T. students directing runners along the course. Organizers will monitor the levels of appropriateness of the runners' garb before the race.
Using sidewalks only, participants will run along Madison, Burlington, Riverside, and Iowa streets. Runners should arrive at 2 p.m. to check in and/or register, donate clothing, and to sign a liability waiver. Snacks, water and hot chocolate will be available after the run.
The first 100 pre-registered participants will receive a Nearly Naked Mile 2010 T-shirt. Runners must attend the event to receive a shirt. Registrations will be accepted the day of the race.
Last year's event attracted 200 runners, who donated approximately 2,000 pounds of clothing. See this Daily Iowan TV story on the 2009 run: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ez5tioCWipE.
