(Media-Newswire.com) - Emilio Botín, the Chairman of one of the world’s largest banks, Banco Santander, visited the University of Bath campus yesterday ( Tuesday, 23 February ) to learn more about some of the initiatives and schemes his banking group has helped to fund.
Mr Botín was joined by António Horta-Osório, CEO of Santander UK and Luis Juste, Director of Santander Universities.
They met the University’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Glynis Breakwell and Chancellor Lord Tugendhat, as well as a number of students who have received Santander awards and bursaries.
The University of Bath was one of the first universities in the UK to form a partnership through Santander Universities.
The two organisations are now in the third year of a partnership agreement that is supporting 11 separate initiatives that benefit undergraduates, postgraduates and staff across the University.
The diverse range of programmes includes scholarships, academic exchanges, travel awards, prizes and projects.
Mr Botín also took the opportunity to meet staff in the Santander branch which is on campus. It has been operating for just over 12 months and was officially opened by Mr Horta-Osório on his last visit to the University.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Glynis Breakwell said: “I am delighted to welcome our guests from Santander to the University of Bath. This visit provides us with an opportunity to show our appreciation for the many ways in which our relationship with Santander is benefiting the University, our students and staff.
“The University is proud to be one of the first in the UK to form a partnership through Santander Universities and I’d like to think that we have been able to build one of the strongest relationships Santander has with a university in this country.”
During the visit, Mr Botín was invited to sign the Chancellor’s Roll of Honour on behalf of Banco Santander in recognition of the bank’s charitable support for the University.
Emilio Botín, Chairman of Banco Santander, said: “It is a great honour to be here at the University of Bath, one of the most prominent higher education institutions in the UK.
“Bath was one of the first universities in the UK to become a member of the Santander Universities network and today our partnership is well established and continues to grow.
“It is for this reason that the support we offer to Bath is the most varied and extensive of all the Santander Universities in the UK.
“We want to continue contributing to the development of projects and programmes that Bath has already set up, and especially hope to be able to assist the University in enriching and expanding its collaboration with universities in Latin-America, Spain and Portugal.”
University schemes supported by the partnership include:
The Bath Award – a new programme that formally recognises the skills and achievements attained by students, engaged in various extra-curricular activities, that will enable them to become both more valuable members of society and also very employable graduates. The Iberamerican Film Bank, established with assistance from Santander, enabling the University to build up one of the best collections of Spanish and Portuguese language films in the UK. Student and staff exchange agreements between the University of Bath and Iberamerican countries. Currently there are several exchange students undertaking their placements abroad. Funding of the MBA Entrepreneurship Prizes in the School of Management, as well as assisting in the judging process for the Awards. Funding for an annual visit of mature students from Alicante University in Spain to Bath. These students undertake English language tuition and participate in cultural activities.
