(Media-Newswire.com) - Winners of the 2009 Iowa Poetry Prize are now available from the University of Iowa Press. The prize was shared by Samuel Amadon's "Like a Sea" and Molly Brodak's "A Little Middle of the Night."
Former UI Writers' Workshop faculty member Dean Young wrote, "On the shore between tragedy and comedy, the evocative and broken language of 'Like a Sea' has the energy of someone trying to sing a hundred things at once and the sorrow of song vanishing as it's made. Never still, each line surges and bulges beyond the decorums of conventional grammar and even the quiet passages have a dynamic, rambunctious originality. This book is as refreshing as wave-crash and as forceful as undertow."
Amadon was born and raised in Hartford, Conn. His poems have appeared in journals including the American Poetry Review, the Denver Quarterly, Tin House, the Boston Review and VOLT. He is also the author of the chapbooks "Advice for Young Couples," "Goodnight Lung," and "Each H," and the co-editor of Projective Industries, a chapbook press.
John Gallaher wrote in the Laurel Review, "As Molly Brodak's poems continually shift perspective from the self to family to history they create a plurality of experiences that allow the reader to keep 'turning under and under every buried thing / until deep [is] not under but across.' And this distance across, this 'from here to there,' is made ever more strange and human by the obstacles of time and dream and illness that rise in these wonderful poems. It's a journey of no easy answers, where 'the future had scalloped edges,' and is not something waiting, but something happening."
Brodak is a lecturer in English and humanities at Augusta State University. Her work has appeared in the Colorado Review, FIELD, Ninth Letter, the Journal, the Northwest Review, the Laurel Review, the New Orleans Review, Hayden's Ferry Review and elsewhere. Her chapbook "Instructions for a Painting" was chosen by UI alumnus Reginald Shepherd for the 2007 GreenTower Press Midwest Chapbook Series.
The Iowa Poetry Prize, open to new as well as established poets, is awarded for a book-length collection of poems written originally in English.
