(Media-Newswire.com) - The Humane Society of the United States commends Gov. Dave Heineman for signing L.B. 252 into law. The new law, which prohibits the possession of animal fighting paraphernalia, was sponsored by Sen. Abbie Cornett, R-Bellevue.
"This law bans possession of the tools required for the repugnant animal fighting trade," said John Goodwin, manager of animal fighting issues for The HSUS. "We praise Governor Heineman, the legislature, Senator Cornett, and the Nebraska and Capital Humane Societies for helping to strip animal fighters of the paraphernalia necessary to conduct their vile activities."
L.B. 252 now makes it illegal to possess equipment, products and materials used in the training, preparation, conditioning or furtherance of the pitting of an animal against another. This includes razor-sharp knives that are strapped to the heels of roosters in cockfights, adrenalin-boosting drugs, blood clotting agents, dogfighting pits and specialized treadmills used to build up a dog's endurance prior to a fight.
The Legislature passed L.B. 252 Friday by a vote of 40 to 1. Complete bill language can be found on the Nebraska Legislature Web site.
