Smoking still kills: what next for tobacco control?

(Media-Newswire.com) - In a lecture at the University of Bath on Wednesday 28 April, Professor Linda Bauld will outline the extent of the tobacco epidemic and what can be done to reduce smoking rates further.
Smoking remains the leading cause of ill-health and preventable death in the world, accounting for more than five million premature deaths each year.
In the UK, despite considerable progress in reducing smoking rates in the past forty years, one in five adults continues to smoke.
Smoking rates are higher in more disadvantaged communities and tobacco use accounts for half of the difference in life expectancy between the most and least disadvantaged groups in England.
Professor Bauld, Head of the University’s Department of Social & Policy Sciences and member of the UK Centre for Tobacco Control Studies, will outline what we know works in tobacco control and to what extent effective policies have been implemented in the UK.
Professor Bauld said: “I will focus in particular on what can be done to encourage smoking cessation amongst adults, including interventions that are successful and the individual and societal level.
“The lecture will examine evidence for new policies to address smoking and I will ask to what extent lessons from tobacco control can be applied to other areas of public policy.”
This inaugural lecture will be held at 6.15pm at the University of Bath’s campus in 5 West 2.3 on Wednesday 28 April. For a free ticket please email Cathy French or call 01225 384263.
