Bulls Claim Third Straight Dad Vail Regatta Championship
PHILADELPHIA, PA â€" The University at Buffalo rowing program won its third straight Jack and Nancy Seitz Trophy on Saturday afternoon as the women’s point champions at the Dad Vail Regatta. UB put all six of its boats in grand finals, winning its second straight Coleman D. Boylan Trophy as winners of the Second Varsity Eight race.
(Media-Newswire.com) - PHILADELPHIA, PA – The University at Buffalo rowing program won its third straight Jack and Nancy Seitz Trophy on Saturday afternoon as the women’s point champions at the Dad Vail Regatta. UB put all six of its boats in grand finals, winning its second straight Coleman D. Boylan Trophy as winners of the Second Varsity Eight race. UB Second Varsity Eight boat of coxswain Kate Evely, Rosa Kemp, Shannon David, Lindsay DiCosimo, Alexandra Condon, Dakota Smith, Ashley Hanhurst, Danielle Carlino and Jacklyn Postulka finished first in the finals, clocking in at 8:01.583, eight seconds ahead of Cal-Sacramento. UB also beat boats from St. Josephs, Drexel, San Diego State and Delaware. Earlier in the morning, when the water conditions were much better, the Bulls won their semifinal heat in 6:38.894, winning by 10 seconds.
“It was great to put six points in the finals and see the Second Varsity Eight come home with the championship,” said head coach Rudy Wieler. “They were our most consistent crew throughout the year and this was a nice way for them to end their season.” Kate Evely
The Varsity Four team consisting of coxswain Mollie Riester, Megan Bayley, Sydney Gilchrist, Sarah Gallagher and Rachel Cuthbert finished second in their final, clocking in at 8:09.397. UB finished second to Western Ontario, but defeated third place Lafayette by over six seconds. The Bulls won their semifinal heat earlier in the morning finishing in 7:23.015, more than four seconds ahead of UMass.
Also finishing in second place in its final was the Novice Eight boat, which finished in 7:06.464, less than eight seconds behind UConn. The Bulls had a photo finish for second place, defeating St. Josephs by less than three-tenths of a second. UB won its semifinal heat by over eight seconds over Grand Valley State, finishing in 6:49.493.
The Lightweight Eight boat, which did not compete on Friday, finished in third place in their grand final also taking part in a photo finish. The Bulls were edged out by Georgia Tech by under two-hundredths of a second for second place. UMass won the race in 7:22.505, while the Bulls finished at 7:30.945.
UB’s Varsity Eight boat and Novice four boats also made grand finals where they finished in sixth and fifth place, respectively. The Novice Four boat had a second place finish early this morning in the semifinals, finishing behind Fairfield by less than four seconds. The Varsity Eight boat also finished in second place in its semifinal, clocking in at 7:06.027, less than six seconds behind Drexel.
The win for the Bulls is their third straight at the Dad Vail Regatta and caps off a season that already include a Colonial Athletic Association Championship.
“It was a great season and I am very happy with the way things went this year,” said Wieler. “We had a lot of young kids make significant contributions and that bodes well for the future of our program. I also want to thank our seniors for a fantastic four years. They won three Dad Vail Regattas and a CAA Championship and they should be proud of their time at the University at Buffalo.”
