The game was tied at two after 85 minutes of action. In the next minute, USA team captain Landon Donovan launched a right corner kick towards the middle of the goal area which was headed in by Maurice Edu for the go-ahead score putting USA up 3-2. The goal was disallowed by the referee on a foul but no player was singled out for the offense.
Controversy ensued as the win by Team USA would have tied them for first place with Slovenia. The points help determine which teams advance to the next round of the 2010 FIFA World Cup tournament.
