ARRANGEMENTS FOR PARLIAMENT TO CONSIDER THE REPORT OF THE 2009 VICTORIAN BUSHFIRES ROYAL COMMISSION
The Government will seek cooperation of all members of the Victorian Legislative Assembly to consider the report of the 2009 Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission on the first available sitting day â€" Tuesday, 10 August, 2010, the Premier, John Brumby, announced today.
(Media-Newswire.com) - The Government will seek cooperation of all members of the Victorian Legislative Assembly to consider the report of the 2009 Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission on the first available sitting day – Tuesday, 10 August, 2010, the Premier, John Brumby, announced today.
Mr Brumby said the Government would seek agreement to suspend Standing Orders directly after Question Time to enable all members who wish to speak on the report to do so. If additional time is required on the following day, Wednesday, 11 August, 2010, this will also be provided.
The Victorian Government will seek the agreement of the Opposition and Independent MP Craig Ingram for these arrangements.
“The tragic 2009 Black Saturday and Gippsland Bushfires claimed 173 lives and were the worst natural disaster in Australia’s history,” Mr Brumby said.
“I believe it is appropriate that the Legislative Assembly consider the Royal Commission’s report at the first available opportunity.
“Under these arrangements which I foreshadowed earlier in the week, the Legislative Assembly would accommodate debate within the existing sitting schedule, while still providing all members who wish to speak the opportunity to do so.
“Our Government established the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission with the widest possible terms of reference because I am determined that no stone be left unturned in learning the lessons from this terrible tragedy.
“Our Government is also committed to discussing the report with groups and organisations – including local government, volunteer fire fighters, environment groups, tourism groups, energy groups, health groups, building groups, community recovery committees – who want to be kept informed and express their views.”
The release of the arrangements for consideration in the Legislative Assembly follows the Premier earlier this week outlining arrangements for the distribution to the Victorian public of the final report.
The Royal Commission is scheduled to deliver its final report to the Governor on Saturday, 31 July, 2010. The Premier will release the report to the public once he has received it from the Governor.
Once the final report has been tabled on Saturday, it will then be available to the Victorian public. The report will be available online at www.royalcommission.vic.gov.au and also at www.vic.gov.au
The report will also be available in hard copy to read at Information Victoria, 505 Little Collins Street, Melbourne. Copies to be delivered by mail during early August can be pre-ordered from the Victorian Government by visiting www.vic.gov.au or by calling 1800 463 684.
