(Media-Newswire.com) - WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - A Purdue University professor has co-authored a book intended for college students and professionals in the demolition process.
The book, "Demolition: Practices, Technology, and Management," was co-authored by Mark Shaurette, assistant professor of building construction management, and Richard Diven, a nearly 40-year veteran in the demolition business. The book will be available from Purdue University Press in late August.
According to the National Demolition Association, the book will serve as a resource for basic demolition knowledge, best practices and standards, and it is the first textbook of its kind in the United States and possibly the world.
"The book is really the genesis of a need that exists within the construction world, that we've really just begun to uncover," Shaurette said. "We're a country of structures that are aging, and as they age they need to be modified or done away with for new things to take their place."
The textbook is intended not only for students in construction management programs, but also for any working professional involved in demolition projects. This could include general contractors, civil engineers, architects, building or manufacturing facility owners, as well as government officials and regulators.
Chapter titles include: Project Management, Disaster Response, Explosives in Demolition, Material Handling and Recycling, Demolition Equipment and Contracts and Accounting for the Demolition Project.
Purdue boasts the nation's first demolition and reconstruction specialization that is offered through the Department of Building Construction Management in the College of Technology.
"The demolition industry has really recognized that they need some additional management support," Shaurette said. "In building construction management, we've attempted to provide the first college-level training in the management of the demolition process."
In the fall of 2005, Shaurette taught his first class about demolition. It was then he recognized a need for written resources.
