(Media-Newswire.com) - Victoria’s leading role in tackling Climate Change will boost jobs and the economy under a new Brumby Labor Government initiative designed to help local businesses export their green services and products overseas.
Industry and Trade Minister Jacinta Allan and Climate Change Minister Gavin Jennings today launched the Melbourne Carbon Export Cluster.
Ms Allan said the Brumby Labor Government would contribute $800,000 towards the initial two years of the cluster to help drive export revenue and create jobs by helping Victorian businesses tap into international carbon markets.
“The Brumby Labor Government’s strong leadership is keeping our economy heading in the right direction and Victoria is creating more jobs than any other State,” Ms Allan said.
“We are giving Victoria’s exporters the best chance to secure a foothold in the emerging international green economy and capitalise on the world-wide recovery from the Global Financial Crisis.
“With Australia a signatory to the Kyoto Protocol, Victorian companies will be able to undertake projects in developing countries that cut emissions.
“Victoria is home to an increasing number of dynamic companies with specialist expertise in reducing carbon emissions.
“We have many businesses already leading the way in exporting carbon project development services, as well as clean technology providers, engineers and experts in project finance, brokers and legal specialists, and carbon auditors.
“The export cluster will build on this existing expertise, assisting Victorian companies to collaborate in implementing carbon projects to generate significant export revenue.
“The export cluster is the first of its kind in Australia and will provide member businesses access to a portfolio of government support across a range of different programs including industry information and education programs, trade missions and events both in Victoria and overseas.”
Climate Change Minister Gavin Jennings said the Brumby Labor Government was rising to the challenge of climate change with its Victorian Climate Change White Paper Action Plan – Taking Action for Victoria’s Future.
“By taking action to reduce Victoria’s carbon emissions by 20 per cent by 2020, we will help drive the development of clean technologies. These will not only reduce Victoria’s emissions but our technology and know-how can be exported to other countries that share our vision,” Mr Jennings said.
“The Brumby Labor Government will also develop a Climate Tech Strategy to position Victoria as a ‘top-5’ global leader in clean technologies.”
Companies involved in the cluster include Ernst & Young, Bakers & McKenzie, Perenia Carbon, Viridis Solutions, AGL, TFS Green and the National Australia Bank.
