(Media-Newswire.com) - The Brumby Labor Government today reiterated its position on retaining the current model of three separate fire agencies in Victoria, which is in line with the Bushfires Royal Commission’s position of not moving towards a single fire service in Victoria.
Police and Emergency Services Minister Bob Cameron said the Government is on the record a number of times as saying on this issue clearly stating it does not support the notion of a single fire service.
“The system we have in Victoria has served Victoria well and with the new Fire Services Commissioner sitting above all three firefighting services we will see even better partnerships between those three organisations,” Mr Cameron said.
“We’ve got one of the great volunteer firefighting services in the world, it’s called the CFA, and we don’t want to lose that and the 60,000 volunteers that are a part of it.
“We’ve got many members of Parliament who are CFA volunteers. It is probably the greatest rural firefighting service in the world and it works on a mix of paid staff and a huge pool of volunteers across the state.
“Those volunteers are vital to ensuring the state has a great surge capacity during times of serious fires and we will not abandon those who give up their time and often put their life on the risk to be part of that.
“I believe our system has served the state well and it will serve the state well in the future.”
