(Media-Newswire.com) - COLLEGE STATION, Aug. 25, 2010 – Six Texas A&M University students will share $40,000 in Tillman Military Scholarships from the Pat Tillman Foundation.
Recipients of the scholarship include Frank Cisneros, an undergraduate history major from San Antonio; Angela Durko Kiker, a graduate tourism marketing major from Forest City, Penn.; Kathrine Mancuso, a graduate international affairs major from Bryan; Cameron McCoy, a graduate history major from Washington, D.C.; Susan Stallings, an undergraduate international studies major from Granbury; and Terrence Weaver, an undergraduate marketing major from San Bernardino, Calif.
A total of 60 military veterans, active service members and their dependents were chosen this year from a pool of more than 1,500 applicants. The students were awarded a collective amount of $720,000 that will be used at 31 institutions in 24 states.
Earlier this year, the Pat Tillman Foundation selected Texas A&M as one of only eight schools to partner with the foundation. The decision to include Texas A&M was influenced by the nearly 1,000 veterans, service members and dependents enrolled at Texas A&M and certified for veteran benefits by the Veteran Services Office on campus. The Veteran Services Office is designed to assist military veterans with their transition from soldier to civilian to student.
The Tillman Military Scholars Program was established in 2009 by the Pat Tillman Foundation. The goal of the program is to provide financial support to service members, veterans and dependents who wish to continue with their education. The scholarship covers direct costs related to education expenses such as tuition, books, room and board and child care.
The foundation is named in honor of Pat Tillman, a dedicated professional athlete and service member, and it strives to help scholars improve their own lives and the lives of those around them by encouraging service and education. The foundation is a national leader in providing educational support and resources to veterans, active service members and their dependents.
