(Media-Newswire.com) - The Centenary Rowing Club is set to develop and produce Queensland’s future rowing stars following the completion of Stage One of its $1.15 million facility development.
State Member for Mount Ommaney Julie Attwood and Sport Minister Phil Reeves officially opened the recently completed ground floor of what is ultimately planned to be a three-storey complex for rowing, canoeing and community use.
“The Bligh Government was proud to contribute $465,000 for the development’s first stage,” Ms Attwood said.
“Plans for the three-storey building include an internal lift and good access for wheelchair users and the elderly.
“The ground floor area is dominated by boat storage and washdown areas, and also has a coach’s room and a wheelchair-accessible toilet.
“Once it’s complete, the club’s new facility will provide a wonderful home base for Queensland rowers, ensuring they’ll have the necessary facilities to become champions.
“And with 180 junior members, Centenary Rowing Club is already a first class community asset.
“Centenary can take great pride in its youth rowing program, which club executives believe is unique in Australia.”
Mr Reeves congratulated the Riverhills club on its encouragement for juniors and for people with a disability.
“The Bligh Government is committed to ensuring all Queenslanders have an opportunity to get involved in sport and recreation, regardless of age or ability,” Mr Reeves said.
“As someone who believes in making sport and recreation a lifetime activity, it’s great to see a club that both embraces young people and is strongly committed to including people with a disability.
“The club reaches out to schools and the community to offer young people not only coaching and exercise but also social and personal development.
“This greatly assists the Bligh Government with its Toward Q2: Tomorrow’s Queensland goal of helping Queenslanders become Australia’s healthiest people by reducing obesity levels by one third by 2020.”
