According to the US Postal Service, the federal organization is looking to consolidate hundreds of locations due to a proposed shortfall of $5 billion. The service has almost 40,000 offices and almost 60,000 retail locations. With the proposed closures, the Postmaster General John Potter mentioned a recent speech that savings to the government could be as high as $100 million.
