(Media-Newswire.com) - Planning Minster Justin Madden has amended the Hume Planning Scheme, with conditions, to allow Pitruzzello Estate, Sunbury to expand into a major regional tourist facility. Mr Madden said the planning scheme amendment allows for the use and development of the Pitruzzello Estate Olive Grove and Winery for a tourist facility for up to 550 people at any one time comprising: A 340 seat restaurant; function centre for 550 patrons including restaurant and art gallery; and 24 units for accommodation.
“Amendment C144 will facilitate a significant investment in Sunbury and surrounding areas by creating jobs, complementing the green wedge and adding to the viability of the existing agricultural uses,” Mr Madden said.
“Hume City Council estimates the new development will boost local tourism, generate 40 direct jobs and 65 indirect jobs during construction and 40 direct jobs and 52 indirect jobs when operating.
“The expansion is expected to have a positive effect on the economic wellbeing of the area and will encourage tourism and recreational activities at a facility of regional significance.”
Mr Madden said the owners will need to provide an Operations Management Plan regarding the effect of lighting and rubbish as well as adhere to conditions regarding paint finish on the buildings.
“All adjacent landowners had the opportunity to comment on the proposal and their concerns have been addressed in the conditions included in the amended planning scheme,” he said.
“The amendment also includes an expiry condition to ensure that the development is commenced and completed within a reasonable time so that the flow on of economic benefits for the Sunbury community are realised.”
Detailed plans for the expansion can now be prepared by the proponent before being endorsed by Council.
The Pantalica Cheese Company was established in 1973 but has since expanded to incorporate olive oil and wine. Located off the Calder Highway, the Pitruzzello Estate features a 158 acre olive grove, boutique vineyard and modern cold press olive oil processing facility.
