(Media-Newswire.com) - Donald H. Sebastian, PhD, senior vice president for research and development at NJIT, has been named Public Sector Advocate of the Year by the Statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey ( SHCC ). Sebastian will receive the award on Nov. 9, 2010 at the SHCC's Corporate Awards Luncheon at the Hilton Hotel and Executive Meeting Center in Hasbrouck Heights. NJIT has a long history of supporting the SHCC. Sebastian recently led a collaboration with the Chamber and the Universidad Garcilaso Del Vega in Lima, Peru to develop a business incubator serving the emerging small businesses in that country with an eye towards increasing export activities. Sebastian’s familiarity with business incubators stems from his role leading NJIT’s Enterprise Development Center ( EDC ), New Jersey’s oldest and largest technology business incubator now supporting more than 95 companies.
Recently, the National Business Incubation Association awarded EDC its Soft Landings International Incubator designation because of its slate of business services for nondomestic firms and its demonstrated success at helping these firms enter the U.S. market.
At NJIT, Sebastian’s other roles include developing partnerships with industry and managing governmental affairs, intellectual property, commercialization and contract projects across the technology spectrum. In 2006, Sebastian was inducted into the New Jersey High-Tech Hall of Fame.
Sebastian’s most recent efforts have focused on leading the effort to form a statewide Health Information Technology Extension Center that was initiated with $23M in federal funding for its first two years. He’s also known throughout the state for forming the NJ Homeland Security Technology Systems Center created under a Governor’s Executive Order that implemented Model Mall and Model School projects and continues to assist in the infusion of new technologies to protect the state.
The SHCC presents these prestigious awards each year to extraordinary and visionary businessmen and women, as well as corporate and government advocates, who have contributed to and demonstrated exemplary excellence and leadership in business. The awards pay tribute to the unparalleled achievements and innovations that have significantly empowered the New Jersey Hispanic community, the state’s largest and fastest-growing minority group.
