(Media-Newswire.com) - ST THOMAS, USVI -- Federal Emergency Management Agency ( FEMA ) officials urge flood insurance holders in the United States Virgin Islands ( USVI ) who suffered damages caused by the recent rain events, to file claims through their insurance agent or company right away.
"Homeowners or renters with flood insurance coverage should file claim to their insurance company, without delay. Also, homeowners that are not sure about the dwelling’s insurance coverage may contact their mortgage bank to obtain information of the type of insurance coverage and the insurance company," said Phil Parr, FEMA Federal Coordinating Officer ( FCO ).
In addition, FEMA advises to take the following steps when filing claims to your insurance agent or company:
Immediately
Have this information at-hand when you call your agent or insurance company: Name of insurance company ( your agent might write policies for more than one company ) Policy number Telephone number/e-mail address where you can be contacted While filing your claim, ask for an approximate time frame in which an Adjustor will visit to make damage appraisal, so you can plan accordingly. Once You Have Reported Your Loss
An Insurance Adjustor will talk with you in order to calculate damage( s ) cost and prepare a repair estimate. Please notify your agent of any changes in your contact information. If you cannot be easily reached, please provide the name of a designated relative or point-of-contact. Before the Insurance Adjustor Visits
Local officials may require the disposal of damaged items. If you must dump items, please keep a swatch or other sample of damaged item( s ) for the Adjustor. Separate damaged items from undamaged items. Place items outside the home, if necessary. Take photos. Your Adjustor will need evidence of damages ( i.e. cut swatches from carpeting, curtains, chairs ) to prepare your repair estimate. Your photos can also show amount of water in the house and damaged property. Make a list of damaged or lost items, including year bought/received and value, where possible. Have receipts of those items for the Adjustor, if possible. Provide to the Adjustor any damage estimates prepared by a contractor( s ), since they will be taken into account for your repair estimate. Contact your insurance company if an Adjustor is not assigned to you several days after filing your claim.
