Diplomatic appointment - Federated States of Micronesia
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Kevin Rudd has today announced Mr Martin Quinn as Australia's new ambassador to the Federated States of Micronesia with non-resident accreditation to the Republic of Marshall Islands and the Republic of Palau.
(Media-Newswire.com) - The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Kevin Rudd has today announced Mr Martin Quinn as Australia's new ambassador to the Federated States of Micronesia with non-resident accreditation to the Republic of Marshall Islands and the Republic of Palau.
Mr Quinn replaces Ms Susan Cox OAM who has been Ambassador since October 2007, and he is expected to take up his appointment in February 2011.
Australia has warm relations with the Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of Marshall Islands, Republic of Palau and the US territories of Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
Cooperation on defence, law enforcement, regional security, environment and marine resources management plays a central part in our relationship with countries in the North Pacific. Tourism and trade links with Guam have grown significantly in recent years.
Australia works multilaterally with North Pacific states in the Pacific Islands Forum to address the challenges of climate change, global economic and governance issues.
Mr Quinn is a career foreign service officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade ( DFAT ). He has extensive professional experience in the Asia Pacific region. In 2010 he was Foreign Policy Adviser at the Asia Pacific Civil-Military Centre of Excellence. Prior to that, he was Australia's Ambassador to Afghanistan ( 2008-2009 ). Earlier diplomatic postings were as Counsellor ( Political ) at the Australian Embassy in Seoul, Republic of Korea; First Secretary in Indonesia and Third Secretary in Thailand.
Mr Quinn is a graduate of Sydney University. He is married with four children.
